Challenges

• Production and development environments combined together
• All the deployments were being carried out manually
• Production/development environments are deployed on default VPC
• Application layer and database layers were in public subnets
• Application layer was communicating S3 bucket via Internet
• Load Balancing and auto scaling were not enabled
• EBS volumes were not encrypted

Searce Solution

Searce automated and deployed the Production and Development environments separately using Terraform, an Infrastructure as a code tool.

• Access to both the environments has been restricted only to specific networks and moved to private subnets
• A common bastion host was deployed to reach the application servers
• Application LoadBalancers were placed in front of the app layer to distribute the incoming traffic
• Provided encryption in transit and rest
• Routed traffic from app layer to S3 using S3 VPC endpoint by not allowing the communication to happen over public Internet
• Autoscaling has been enabled on the web tier to serve the peak loads

Business Impact

• Cost optimization was achieved by avoiding billing for unwanted resources
• Redeployment was made easy and all manual effort was removed
• Scale up and down of resources based on user traffic has been achieved
• Best security practices were implemented
